COOL SMART - EXPANDED Opportunities for 2008!


COOL SMART's 2008 offers and incentives reflect some program changes, largely based on suggestions from contractors – thank you for your support and input!

Cool Rewards for QIV Contractors! COOL SMART offered a Cool Rewards contest in 2007. Multiple prize categories included cash and eligibility for a grand prize drawing. We are expanding this in 2008.

Program updates for 2008 include a rebate of up to $500 for high performance equipment. For a summary of the 2008 program click here.

Quality Installation Verification Incentives

QIV services can be performed for any new installation, regardless of SEER or rebates. QIV commissioning includes ENERGY STAR and non-ENERGY STAR systems installed on or after April 1, 2005.

Digital Checkup –Another QIV service we call a “Digital Checkup” can also be performed on any existing, operable and eligible system. (Please click here for details, including eligibility and incentive information.)

Right Sizing Incentive – COOL SMART will provide an incentive of $150 per 1/2 ton of downsizing to the contractor and $150 per 1/2 ton of downsizing to the customer for replacement systems. The system must be sized either to match ASHRAE Manual J sizing, or to match the measured system air flow of the existing ductwork. Written pre-approval is needed when the system to be installed is larger than 3 tons.

Duct Sealing Initiative – COOL SMART will also be offering contractor incentives for a limited number of duct sealing applications.

NATE Certification Training – A “tuition reimbursement” of up to $250 will continue to be offered for technicians becoming NATE certified in either Air Conditioning or Heat Pump Service and/or Installation in 2008. COOL SMART will not be offering a dollar incentive for installations, but will continue to promote NATE in customer education materials.

COOL SMART - Digital Checkup Description
Contractor Incentive: $175
Instant Credit for Customer: $100

The Digital Checkup involves measuring charge with respect to airflow and reporting on both for existing equipment using CheckMe! or Honeywell Service Assistant. The results/data are reported to the customer for educational purposes and to COOL SMART for third-party verification. Only contractors who have been QIV trained and listed are eligible to participate. As an alternative COOL SMART plans that a non-intrusive method may be used if it is developed and approved. An alternative method would be one where air flow is measured with a true flow plate or hot wire anemometer for “benchmarked” systems.

Each residential central AC or HP unit is only eligible for this service once per owner in a five-year period. The unit must be operable prior to the start of a Digital Checkup.

For a contractor to receive a $175 incentive, a $100 Instant Credit must be offered to and accepted by the customer, and the system must pass program requirements. The Instant Credit may be applied to the cost of the Digital Checkup service OR to the cost of repairs needed to have the system pass program requirements. The unit must be operable and the customer must agree to needed repairs sufficient to at least adjust charge with respect to air flow. Contractors may receive a rebate for the $100 from COOL SMART and also receive a $50 Digital Checkup fee, provided:

  1. the form(s) and data submittal are complete and include a copy of the invoice with the customer's signature showing acceptance of the $100 Instant Credit
  2. the unit passes or meets exception condition where at least charge with respect to air flow is within acceptable parameters
  3. this unit is eligible as defined above

Contractors may apply to COOL SMART to obtain an exclusive ticket for a Digital Checkup for a specific customer/unit in order to avoid duplicate checkups by other contractors. Tickets are good for a limited time period so that customers can go to another contractor if the first one fails to do the checkup.
